International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language

Dear all,

So I have studied only one topic. Later I really want to listen to some more because they are really useful, in my opinion.
I really want to share with you one interesting and important information which I have found during the listening to one pretty special conference of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.

IATEFL logoIn that post, I would like to tell you about the forum which is devoted to autonomous listening. I strongly believe that it is really necessary for learners because our listening skills are essential. Besides, working as a tutor, I have found out that it could be a real problem.

Talking about this lecture, there are three speakers. They discuss how to bridge the space between what is said and what is heard, explore how to 'increase students listening comprehension through metacognitive strategies and look at the implementation of academic listening circles for developing autonomous listening in EAP learners.'

I would like to tell you a little bit about their lectures.
The abracadabra of listening by Analia Duarte. Actually, I have just listened to only this one,  the next ones I am going to finish a bit later (I even want to add more information after that to this post). In her speech, she mentions absolutely extraordinary points. Moreover, she does it well.
What is extremely difficult while you are listen to something according to Analia's speech?
  • short-term memory
  • mental map
  • cultural expectations
I strongly agree with that.
Also, she mentions another interesting thing like four types of listeners? Isn't it eye-opening? I guess so!
Let me highlight these types according to Duarte:
  • analyser negotiates a new vocabulary as parts of the text
  • leader summarises the main idea, leads a group
  • discourser focuses on systemic and referential discourse markers
  • exemplifier identifies examples and connects them to the main idea
Besides, I really enjoyed her example devoted to food and cake. The idea is that we may listen to something but sometimes we cannot catch the whole sentence but we can fill some gaps logically. It is not bad if we cannot hear all.

Finally, I truly enjoyed this task because I have learned some new information which is definitely helpful.

thanks you a lot for such an informative and reader oriented post! I truly enjoyed reading it and found it to be written with yout audience in mind as well as specific enough for it to get a good idea about the content of the session you have watched. I was also very pleased to learn that you are going to watch some other sessions and that you liked completed this task. I liked the food and cake example you have mentioned.

It'd be great if you shared with us the information about some other session if you indeed are going to watch more of them.
